University Technical College
What is a UTC?
A University Technical College (UTC) education offers a head start in science education from age 13 to 19, leading to high quality careers. At Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology, students have the opportunity to study GCSEs and sixth form qualifications whilst developing technical skills by working with top employers and universities. Students work an extended day, from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. This ensures that they have time to complete both academic qualifications and technical studies. It also allows time in the day for supervised study so that a large proportion of ‘home work’ can be done in college. Technical learning at Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology takes the form of one whole day, every week, of practically based science project work.
A UTC offers a different approach to education…
University Technical Colleges (UTCs) have been designed to meet the needs of employers for up and coming young talent with the right set of skills and knowledge to fill the jobs of tomorrow. The technical programme, which at Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology is called the ‘Challenge Day’, is influenced by employers, research organisations and local universities. The whole approach of UTCs enables students to develop their employability skills. Work experience is an important part of this.
Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology is set in state of the art facilities for science and technology. On entering the building you immediately feel the energy and there is a vibrancy that matches the impressive surroundings.
From 2018 we will be recruiting students to begin courses in year 9, as well as in year 10. This is so that students who currently attend schools where GCSE courses start in year 9 will have the opportunity to transfer across at that point. Those starting with us in 2018 in year 9 will begin their GCSE study by following a foundation course. This will involve all the preparation required to give students a ‘head start’ in GCSE programmes so that when they start their GCSE specification courses in year 10 they are already confident and ahead in their studies.
