Graduated Newnham College, Cambridge with 2:1 Hons degree in Law, and qualified June 1965 as solicitor. Worked in USA as a consultant to US Department of Defence then as management consultant in UK. Joined Board of Trade in 1969 as Principal, working mostly in industrial assistance and restructuring of steel industry. Left in 1982 to join Charterhouse Bank in London (1982-2001) advising on privatisation in England and Scotland.
Non-executive director (NED) of Yorkshire Building Society (1991-1999) BPP Holding (1993 – 2005) (chairman 2001-2005) and other public companies. Governor of the BBC (1994 to 1999). Adviser to Strategic Defence Review (1998-1999), NED Defence Logistics Organisation (1999-2005). Appointed to House of Lords as Labour peer in 2000. NED of the London Stock Exchange Group 2001-2013 and other public companies. Chancellor BPP University 2007 to present.
